Food Pantry to Open on Feb. 18, 2012

The new Food Pantry at Rougemont Church is stocked and ready to open on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012! Hours will be from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, at the church. Please help us get the word out to needy folks in the community. The Food Pantry also can make deliveries if needed.

It might look empty now, but it won't look that way for long. Rougemont UMC, in partnership with the Rougemont Ruritans, will house a Food Pantry to help feed the hungry in our own community. On Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, folks from Rougemont Church and the Ruritans came together to clean out an unused room at the church, which will become the new Food Pantry. Volunteers cleaned, power-washed, hauled out old furniture, and brought in new shelving.

Rougemont Church will hold a food-stocking day this Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, at the church. Please drop off non-perishable food items, as well as things like diapers and paper towels, during our drop-off hours. The church is located at the stop light in Rougemont, at the corner of Hwy. 501 North and Red Mountain Road.

The Christmas worship schedule for the Rougemont Charge (Rougemont, New Bethel, and Union Grove United Methodist Churches) is as follows:

Saturday, Dec. 24, at 5 p.m.: Rougemont UMC will host a candlelight Christmas Eve worship service.

Sunday, Dec. 25, at 11 a.m.: New Bethel UMC will hold a Christmas Day worship service.

ALL ARE INVITED!!!

Rougemont and Union Grove will not hold Christmas Day worship services.

Rougemont Community Tree Lighting

Rougemont UMC provided refreshments following the annual Rougemont Community Tree Lighting on Saturday evening, Dec. 3. The community Christmas tree is located in Rougemont UMC's front yard. The fun began at the Ruritan building with a visit from Santa and the breaking of a pinata. Children piled into a hay wagon and made the short trip to Rougemont UMC for the lighting of the tree and singing Christmas carols. Then everyone went inside to the fellowship hall to enjoy hot chocolate, hot cider, and cookies. Merry Christmas!

New ministerial intern arrives

The Rougemont Charge welcomes our new ministerial intern for the academic year, Laura-Allen Kerlin. Her first Sunday with us is Sept. 25, 2011. Laura-Allen is a United Methodist from Louisiana, she has degrees from Clemson, and is a second-year student at Duke Divinity School. She plans to be a pastor in South Carolina when she graduates. Welcome, Laura-Allen!

"Feed My Sheep" motorcycle ride

Rougemont Church held a "Feed My Sheep" motorcycle ride on Sunday, July 24, 2011. The church prepared breakfast for the bikers, then everyone worshipped together in the sanctuary, and then bikers departed on a 98-mile scenic ride, led by Rougemont member Robin Pendergraph. We raised more than $1,000 for Open Table Ministry. Thanks to all who worked so hard to make the day a success. Praise God for a glorious day!

Motorcycle Ride scheduled for Sunday, July 24

Rougemont Church will host its first annual "Feed My Sheep" motorcycle ride on Sunday, July 24. The church will prepare breakfast for the bikers from 8:15 to 8:55 a.m., then everyone will worship together at 9 a.m., and then bikers will depart at 10 a.m. from the church yard for a scenic 98-mile ride. Donations will benefit Open Table Ministry with the homeless. All are invited.

Thanks to everyone who helped make the Community Christmas Tree Lighting on Saturday night, Dec. 3, such a success. We even had snow! The Rougemont Ruritans hosted a evening with Santa, and then everyone came by hay wagon to Rougemont UMC, where we lit the tree in the front yard, sang Christmas carols, and came inside to drink hot chocolate and warm up. It was an evening to remember!

Greetings from South Africa

Hello Rougemont Church,

I have been in South Africa for two weeks, and it has been a great experience. I visited the new Methodist seminary in Pietermaritzburg for two days, and then traveled to Durban to the Manning Road Methodist Church where I will complete the internship. Durban is a beautiful city on the coast of the Indian Ocean. I am surprised that it is a city with steep hills, and it reminds me of San Francisco.

The Synod of the Methodist Churches of Southern Africa was occurring in Durban when we arrived, so we sat in on these annual sessions.

The pastor of Manning Road Church ran an ultra-marathon on Sunday, and the assitant was busy with Synod assignments in other churces, and the guest minister became ill, so I was called on to preach at the 7:30 a.m. traditional service and the 6 p.m. contemporary service at Manning Road the Sunday I arrived! It went well.

At Manning Road, I will be sitting in with small groups, working to bring their Zulu congregation more into connection with the rest of the congregation. I also will be developing connections with faith and community groups in the neighborhood, and visiting their home-bound elderly members.

Dewey has been our Duke Divinity ministerial intern for the past year; he has blessed us with his sweet presence and stellar preaching, and he and Lynne have blessed us with their singing (and Lynne's piano playing). The Rougemont Charge honored them and their family at a luncheon on April 25 at New Bethel UMC. Dewey departs for his summer field education placement in South Africa on May 24. He will keep us updated on his adventures, which will be posted right here.

Long, long, long ago;

Way before this winter's snow

First fell upon these weathered fields;

And dream of how the spring would be,
